Fire Damage

A property may suffer a variety of damages from the fire. Some fires completely damage a building, which results in an insurance claim for total loss. Others produce smoke or soot damage across the entire building, even when they just affect one or two rooms or the outside space.

  • Do not touch the fire scene
  • Contact fire department and police to get a case #.
  • Prevent further damage by tarping the roof, boarding up windows, etc.
  • Take lots of pictures and videos. These will be used for reference by you and possibly needed as evidence for your claim
  • Inventory damaged items before they are discarded. They must be cataloged to ensure consideration when filing the claim
  • Save the receipts of all expenses. They will need to be turned in with your claim
  • You do not have to sleep at a friend’s house! Your policy entitles you to stay in a hotel.
